Masters by Research

Study Masters by Research

If you are thinking about progressing to a PhD, or perhaps are interested in a career where advanced research skills are valued, then a Masters by Research could be the right choice. It’s ideal for people interested in pursuing a specific shorter-term research project, perhaps while working. You will receive expert guidance and supervision and will have the option to apply to transfer to an MPhil or PhD. There are no taught modules on a Masters by Research, so you should already have undertaken independent research as part of your previous studies (for example through your dissertation). Most subjects offer a Masters by Research.

You can start your research degree in either September, January or April.

There is no minimum registration period and students may complete their studies within a shorter time scale. In cases of excellent progress a programme change and up to MPhil/ PhD may be possible. Doing the MA by Research part-time will allow further flexibility.

A BA at the level of 2:1 or above (in your discipline or an adjacent discipline) with some indication of excellence in written coursework/ dissertation or equivalent assessment materials.
