He joined the RN as an Ordinary Seaman in 1941 and saw active service from the Arctic to the Indian Ocean. This gave the background to his hugely successful literary career starting with the incomparable novel HMS Ulysses. Approximately half the book covers his wartime service while the second half covers his literary success and later life.
