Study abroad experience encapsulated in photography competition

As part of a celebratory welcome back evening for all returning study abroad students, the winner of the study abroad photography competition was revealed. The twenty shortlisted photographs are currently on display in Queen’s café.

On 8 October, The College of Humanities hosted a celebratory welcome-back evening for all students returning from their year or semester abroad. During the evening, the winners of the study abroad photograph competition were announced.

The competition, which ran for the first time this year, received over 150 entries from students who had studied or worked abroad in the previous two academic years. Their brief was to encapsulate the study abroad experience in a photograph with a focus on three main themes: landscapes, local traditions and folklore, and friends and family.

The first prize of £250 was awarded to Victoria Lang, a final year French and English student at the University of Exeter. Her striking photograph was taken at Nice’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, (MAMAC), France, where she worked for three months. The picture captures the main museum from beneath a red, wooden lattice that was installed on the museum’s esplanade. Two runners up, Rebekah Brown and Evan Campbell, were also recognised at the presentation evening and received prizes of £150 and £75 respectively.

Victoria comments, “I'm really pleased to have won the competition! The photo was taken on the first day of my internship at MAMAC. Looking back at the photo, it evokes a lot of memories about how much I enjoyed my time working there.”

Out of the 167 photos submitted, the best 20 photographs were selected by a judging panel based on their technical excellence, diversity of subject matter and originality. The shortlisted photographs were printed on a float frame, by Focal Point Imaging in Exeter, and are currently on display in Queen’s Building café, Streatham Campus. All students and staff at the University had the opportunity to vote for their favourite from those shortlisted by the panel.

The exhibition will run in Queen’s café until Friday 25th October. The photographs can also be viewed on the Study Abroad Photo Competition Facebook page.
