Alex Louch

History student elected VP Academic Affairs

After a close-run electoral race at the end of Campaigns Week, in which five Humanities students ran overall, History student Alex Louch has been elected the Students' Guild’s Vice-President of Academic Affairs, with an impressive 2,349 to 1,770 final round votes.

Alex, who is Undergraduate Faculty Rep for History and is in his third year at Exeter, said: “It was truly incredible to see how many of my friends came out to help me, and that was the only reason that I was able to win in the end. Now I just can't wait to get started in July.”

Humanities students have traditionally been among the most engaged students, with 24% of the candidates running campaigns this year coming from the College of Humanities. The election was closely fought throughout the week, with publicity stunts, chaired debates and on-campus campaigning involving all candidates.

Alex added: “The other candidates in the election were absolutely fantastic and it was certainly one of the hardest fought elections for academic affairs for many years. They would have all done a fantastic job, and I owe it to them that I work as hard as I can over the next year.”

Alex, continues the trend of strong representation by Humanities students in the position of Academic Affairs, with both predecessors (James Eales and current VP Academic Affairs Imogen Sanders) having studied Humanities subjects.

Alex cites his History degree as key to his success, saying: “The independence you learn throughout and specifically the ability to manage various academic and extra-curricular commitments, will hopefully prepare me for the difficult time management responsibilities of being a Sabbatical Officer. The way that the History and the College of Humanities more widely have listened to students, through a constant focus on the student experience, was crucial as I now know that the University really listens to every student and representative.”

The College of Humanities is proud to work closely with the University of Exeter Students’ Guild to provide the best opportunities and representation of students at every level. The College wishes Alex and his new colleagues every success in their roles and looks forward to working with them in the future.
