Public Lecture 'Lu Xun's Hard Translation: its Acceptance in China and the West'

The College of Humanities and the International Office host Professor LUO Xuanmin as our Visiting Speaker on Monday 8 October 2012, and also giving two seminars on Wednesday 10 October and Thursday 11 October.

Professor Luo Xuanmin is Professor of Translation Studies and Comparative Literature, in the Deptartmemt of Foreign Languages, Tsinghua University, Beijing and Director, Confucius Institute for Business, London School of Economics. He is the author or editor of many books, including Translating China (2009); Structuralism, Deconstruction and Constructivism: Theories on Translation in China Since 1979 (2009); Translation Studies: An Interdisciplinary Approach (2006); Literary Criticism and Literary Translation (2005); Hermeneutics and Deconstruction: Essays on Translation  (2004);  Translation of Foreign Literatures in China (2004).

He is the translator of The Audacity of Hope, Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream (by Barack Obama) (2008); Jesus the Christ (by Walter Kasper) (2008); and Creative Intuition in Art and Poetry (by Jacques Maritain) (1991). Professor Luo has held international fellowships in Venice, Salzburg, Los Angeles, Moscow, New Haven.

Public Lecture "Lu Xun's Hard Translation: its Acceptance in China and the West"

Monday 8 October 4:00 pm, MR1 Queens. Introduced and discussion led by Professor Regenia Gagnier

Lu Xun is arguably the greatest modern Chinese writer; his fiction and criticism were central in the early twentieth century in modernizing China after the fall of the Qing dynasty. The lecture should be of interest to anyone interested in modern literatures. As the translator of Barak Obama’s Audacity of Hope, Professor Luo is also offering two seminars, which should be of interest to Americanists and globalization scholars.
