Exciting funding opportunities for doctoral study in French at the University of Exeter

French at Exeter is one of the UK’s leading centres for teaching and research in French. We attach particular importance to the quality of research supervision and training along with the integration of postgraduates into our academic and research community. Our doctoral students also benefit from regular research training seminars and scholars of international repute are frequent visitors.

For applicants who are interested in joining our exciting research community this October, we are offering two doctoral funding awards.

Our Awards

French Studies PhD Studentship (AHRC funded) - Gossip and Nonsense: Excessive Language in Renaissance France

Doctoral research proposals on a topic which is both within the field of French Renaissance literature and complementary to the main themes of the grant are welcome. An example of a viable topic would be ‘Comic sexual euphemism in French texts, 1532-1616’, addressing questions of ancient and Renaissance rhetorical theories underlying the practice of euphemism, the literary techniques for achieving it, and the extent to which it subverts social and linguistic norms. Authors to be studied would include Rabelais, Montaigne and Béroalde de Verville

French Language and Culture AHRC Doctoral Awards

Research in the discipline of French is distinctive for the sheer range of expertise covered, including literature and culture from the medieval period to the present day, linguistics, visual culture and critical theory. We also contribute to a range of cross-disciplinary strengths, including Medieval Studies, Linguistics, Film, Gender Studies, and Translation Studies. We welcome doctoral research proposals related to any of these topics within French Studies.
