Modern Politics and Policy

The members of the Modern Politics and Policy group share an interest in the development of political processes, and the culture of politics, both in democracies and in non-democratic societies. Their research is concerned both with the ‘high politics’ of policymaking elites and with the ‘low politics’ of ordinary people’s engagement with elections and other political activities. The group’s interests cover a wide variety of geographic areas (notably Britain, the USA, the USSR, France and Spain) and themes (economic policy, local and regional politics, Labour, Liberalism, Conservatism, and Communism). The group’s transnational approach reflects its desire to locate national policy studies within a global context, in order to illuminate how politics is embedded within civil society, internationally as well as locally.
