Classics and Ancient History
Professor Matthew Wright
Congratulations on your offer! Classics and Ancient History is a thriving department with an exceptionally broad range of expertise and an eclectic mix of characters! We combine innovative approaches to teaching and researching the ancient world with a genuine belief in the transformative power of our subject.
We are enormously proud of our Student Classics Society and Student-Staff liaison committee. This sense of community makes us unique and we would love to have you come and join us.
I love the variety within the course and unusual opportunities like the Creative Interpretative Project, a module I completed this year which allowed me to explore the Ancient World through art. I’ve been able to really get to know all my lecturers, so that I can come to them whenever I need help with anything at all in my studies.
Exeter has also offered me opportunities beyond Classics through an internship with the Digital Humanities Lab. This has been a chance to work with academics on projects and get a unique insight into where studies in Humanities might be heading in the future.
As someone who’d never studied Ancient History before, but came from a place of grassroots interest, studying the course at Exeter was undoubtedly a big jump – but one that has immeasurably changed my life for the better.
The sense of community, common interest within the department and the sheer number of available opportunities and student support throughout have ensured my three years at the university have been some of my best. I now have tools and skills to make the most of the professional world beyond university.
Being able to study Classics at Exeter has been a real privilege. The lecturers are phenomenal, as experts in the field who care deeply about both the subject and teaching.
Their teaching allows me and my fellow students to fulfill our potential, and the variety of modules spans topics I never dreamed I would be able to learn about as part of my degree. Studying here is undoubtedly the best decision I've ever made.
My first year was useful for introducing me to the mechanics of the course, and the tutors have been fair, patient and helpful. I settled into the course and I am very much enjoying myself. I am enjoying my course so far. I am studying what I love, as well as expanding my horizons in directions I was not expecting.
I have also been with the Archery Club for two years now, and both the activity and the environment allow me to enjoy something sporty, whilst I myself have never really been so.
I’ve loved every moment of my time here; the course has so many different options that it can really cater to everyone’s interests. It also gives people the opportunity to explore areas that they’ve not had the chance to explore before and to develop new interests. It’s been really fun going from a lecture on philosophy to one on drama to learning Latin, all in one day.
There’s been a lot of stuff that I didn’t expect, but that all adds to the excitement of it and has meant that I never know what’s coming next, it’s certainly never stale.
