Early Christian Women: Eve, Mary, Thecla (THE2147)

30 credits

In this module you will learn about the diverse ways in which early Christians viewed women. You will study how they read stories about women in the Bible (e.g. Eve and Mary the mother of Jesus), how they told their own stories about holy women and how they viewed particular historical women of their own day. You will learn how women were ‘viewed’ intellectually (e.g. in accounts of creation and salvation), how they were visualised in material culture and how they were portrayed using literary tools—especially rhetoric. You will explore Christian women’s relationship to power, leadership and religious vocation.
