Celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS at special Exeter birthday party

The 70th anniversary of the NHS will be celebrated with a special birthday party in Exeter this month

People can mark the birth of the National Health Service in 1948, and its contribution to keeping generations of people healthy, through card making and children’s stories, and other activities for all ages.

Those who attend the party can also share their memories of being treated by doctors, nurses, dentists and other health staff and share their views on the future of the NHS.

The event will be held on Saturday, 30th June 1-3pm at Exeter Library, Castle Street, and is organised by researchers at the University of Exeter’s Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health, with colleagues at the Libraries Unlimited and University of Warwick. The academics are working on a project to investigate the history and impact of waiting for medical treatment.

One of the organisers, Dr Michael Flexer, from the University of Exeter, said: “We hope to see as many people as possible at the birthday party. There will be events for all ages which help families explore the history and future of the NHS. We hope they will share their memories of the NHS with us.

“We are particularly keen to hear from anyone else who is turning or has turned 70 in 2018.  We’d love to celebrate their birthday at the same time!”

There will be films showing NHS services through the decades, a mock consultation room where people can leave thoughts about the NHS, any treatment needed to improve services and views on its future. People will also be able to record a message for the NHS and a memory for an archive being compiled by academics, and take part in a story-writing workshop.
