Award-winning author Kamila Shamsie to speak at University’s Creative Dialogues series

Award-winning author Kamila Shamsie will be the next guest in Exeter’s event series Creative Dialogues on Thursday 18 October.

The winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2018 will speak about her experiences growing up in Karachi and her writing career as part of the free event.

Kamila Shamsie has written seven novels, which have been translated into over 20 languages. As well as winning the Women’s Prize for Fiction this year, Home Fire was shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award and long listed for the Man Booker Prize. Burnt Shadows was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction; and A God in Every Stone was shortlisted for the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction. Three of her other novels - In the City by the Sea, Kartography and Broken Verses - have received awards from the Pakistan Academy of Letters. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and one of Granta’s ‘Best of Young British Novelists.’

Creative Dialogues is a series of ‘in-conversation’ events which showcase a range of high-profile speakers who are leaders in their respective fields across the creative industries and humanities.

Kamila Shamsie will be in conversation with Professor Vesna Goldsworthy, writer, broadcaster and Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Exeter. Professor Goldsworthy will delve into Kamila’s experiences as a woman pursuing a career in writing and her literary accomplishments, including recognition as one of Orange’s 21 Writers of the 21st Century.

Professor Vesna Goldsworthy said: “I am immensely excited to welcome Kamila Shamsie at Exeter. Her Home Fire is a stunning literary novel, an electrifying investigation of what it means to be a Muslim in contemporary Britain.”

This is the third Creative Dialogues event the University has held since its launch at the beginning of the year. Previous guests include former editor of British Vogue Alexandra Shulman CBE and acclaimed actor Charles Dance OBE.

The event, supported by the Ronald Duncan Literary Foundation, will take place 7pm-8.30pm at the Alumni Auditorium on the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus.
