The Centre aims to consolidate and enhance the visibility of Latin American studies (broadly conceived) as a growing field of study at the University of Exeter, and provide a platform to draw together the existing, but fragmented, expertise in Latin America in various departments of the University of Exeter.
Exeter Centre for Latin American Studies (EXCELAS)
EXCELAS is dedicated to strengthening the existing expertise in Latin America in various departments at the University of Exeter, including Modern Languages, Archaeology, History, and Politics. We seek to nurture the visibility of Latin American Studies, which we conceive broadly to include research and teaching that engages with Latin American relations with North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
We work closely with colleagues from a variety of different fields, namely Archaeology, History, Modern Languages and Politics, with the goal of connecting germane research interests and fostering innovative research collaborations that may lead to interdisciplinary research bids.
We explore links with the existing Centre for Translating Cultures and the Centre for Archaeology of the Americas, with which a number of us already work. In collaboration with the Digital Humanities Lab, we are also looking to curate digital exhibitions, and produce video and audio recordings of future planned events.

EXCELAS echoes and strengthens the unique identity of the University of Exeter’s offer in Latin American studies, which is distinct from that of other UK universities.
• boasts both Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking expertise;
• embraces Caribbean research, which is not always included in LA centres;
• involves colleagues across ML, English, Politics, History, Film and Archaeology.
We will regularly invite visiting scholars to contribute to our seminar series, and will organise events in collaboration with the Digital Humanities Lab and other research centres, such as the Centre for Translating Cultures and the Centre for the Archaeology of the Americas.
Conferences and events
EXCELAS will hold events in the form of conferences and workshops that are open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students, university staff, and the public at large. We will explore a range of topics relating to Latin America, from the Holocene to the present day.
Details of the events programme will be available on the website soon.
We are looking to expand our network of international partners, as well as implement student exchange opportunities with universities in Latin America and beyond.
