Module aims

This module aims to develop specific language skills linked to business on situations that take place within the business and economic world. It provides also with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Spanish economy and society within the last thirty five years and the place the country now occupies within the wider economic framework of Europe. It will also be possible to study some of the key aspects of globalisation and sustainability policies and the effect they have had in Latino America. Through the study and analysis of specific journalistic styles, students will gain a deeper understanding of the media today and the importance that the electronic newspapers and blogs have gained in our communication process. In turn, this will give students an insight into the world of journalism and an opening for possible career prospects in this area.

ILO: Module-specific skills

  • 1. Apply knowledge of a broad range of grammatical features in the target language (including some complex and advanced structures) to a range of different exercises such as translations and summaries of complex passages based on economic, political and social texts.
  • 2. To discuss complex topical and abstract related issues in an appropriate register of oral Spanish, using a broad range of vocabulary and idiom.
  • 3. To develop the writing of commercial correspondence in a variety of contexts.
  • 4. To give a structured oral presentation as part of a team of a fictitious business proposal and to engage in debate on the issues raised by the presentation.
  • 5. To prepare, collect and analyse materials for a written dossier in the target language on a subject related to economic, political or social issues in Spain or Latino America.

  • 6. Access and use critically printed and, where appropriate, electronic learning resources identified as useful by the course tutor; find independently and evaluate critically other relevant resources.
  • 7. Using recommended bibliographical tools, present a critical bibliography giving a balanced overview of an aspect of the subject.
  • 8. Engage critically with the Spanish language media (printed and electronic, including television and radio) using it as a resource for independent researches.

ILO: Personal and key skills

  • 9. Present information and arguments on a designated or negotiated topic to a group of listeners and respond to questions and responses from the group.
  • 10. Adopt a critical approach to the selection and organisation of a large body of material in order to produce, to a deadline a written argument of some complexity.
  • 11. Demonstrate ability to combine a variety of IT skills in researching and reporting on a topic
  • 12. Communicate information arguments of some complexity in the target language and work effectively as part of a team.

4. Banking and finances/Response to requests/The Spanish banking system and its connections with Latino America

5. The Stock exchange/Payments and invoices/The development of the Stock exchange and the effects of the financial crisis

6. Globalisation and foreign investments/Exports and Imports/Commercial reports/The effects of the global markets in Latino America
