Spanish and English Modernists (MLS3024)

15 credits

In the early decades of the twentieth century, Modernists across Europe “ripped up the rule books of visual art, design, literature, architecture…” (British Library exhibition). The module compares the early stages of this powerful shift in sensibilities in two Spanish novels and one novel in English, published between the turn of the century and the First World War.

The module is suitable for Hispanic Studies students at level 3. It is co-listed for non-Hispanic Studies students, including students of English, Modern Languages or Humanities, who may study the texts in translation. Prior study of English literature is not a requirement.
