Module aims

This course consolidates and develops the basic language skills acquired in MLP 1056, enabling students to communicate confidently in Portuguese through a range of written, oral, and comprehension exercises, as well as through integrated translation exercises, covering different registers and areas of vocabulary.

The module will focus on more advanced grammatical constructions and categories, namely the Subjunctive, which will enable students to communicate in a wider range of communicative contexts.

Finally, the module is committed to address important current affairs and cultural and social topics which are particularly relevant in the diverse Portuguese-speaking world.

  • 1. Apply a broad range of grammatical features of Portuguese to a variety of written and oral tasks
  • 2. Use a bilingual or monolingual dictionary to glean information about meaning, register, usage and grammatical forms.
  • 3. Engage in discussion of a range of contemporary topics in oral Portuguese, articulating one's own opinions and responding to the opinions of others.
  • 4. Give short oral presentations in Portuguese on a defined topic to a small group of listeners and engage in group discussion of the topic presented.

  • 5. Understand and use grammatical structures at an intermediate level and understand basic differences in style and register in written and spoken Portuguese, putting in to practice in different linguistic tasks
  • 6. Engage, under guidance, with the Portuguese-language media, printed and electronic

Syllabus plan

Whilst the content may vary from year to year, it is envisioned that systematic coverage of aspects of the materials in the course books including a comprehensive study of the uses of the Subjunctive mode versus the Indicative in complex sentences and subordinate clauses

Skills will be integrated in each class and will be developed in context: there will be an overarching theme in which students will acquire new grammar points, acquire new vocabulary, enhance comprehension skills and ability to develop a natural and accurate form of expression in the target language. Translation exercised will be used as a way to perceive clear mismatches between the source and the target languages (e.g. grammar, vocabulary as well as style mismatches) and strategies to overcome these mismatches will be acquired.

Oral work with a variety of tasks (e.g. presentations, regular small group discussions and debates).

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
