Pamphlets and Propaganda in German and Austrian History (MLG3026)

15 credits

How does propaganda work? And how has it developed in the course of German history?

Our take on propaganda is consciously broad. We consider visual, cinematic, text-based and other examples. We start with the propaganda that characterized the conflict between Catholics and Protestants in the 16th century. In the 19th century one focus includes Karl Marx's ground-breaking Communist Manifesto. What did, then, the National Socialists contribute to propaganda that allowed for the cliched label "masters of propaganda"? We conclude with an assessment how, in the middle of the Cold War, the GDR was able to promote the Berlin Wall as "antifascist protection barrier". Right through the module we will reflect the close ties between politics, religion and propaganda and how technological change has an immediate impact on propagandists/ tools.
