Introduction to the History of Art (AHV1002)

This module provides you with an overview of the methods used to analyse works of art and, as part of that, a history of the discipline of Art History and its development of a variety of critical and analytic procedures and frames of reference. You will be introduced to the appropriate terminology used in art historical writing and to the technical literature on which the subject relies. You will also learn the theoretical approaches that inform art historical writing. Using key works of art as test cases, the syllabus includes information about media and techniques, stylistic analysis and historical and contextual understandings.
