Glossaries

Maria Fusaro’s ERC project Sailing into Modernity: Comparative Perspectives on the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century European Economic Transition, developed a table of the roles on board merchant ships during the seventeenth century, in Italian, Dutch, English and French, which can also be downloaded here. The table includes the main terms found in each language and a brief description of the duties of each.

Marta García Garralón has prepared an additional document sketching the roles on board Iberian early modern vessels, focussing on the specific terminology used in those active within the Carrera de Indias.

Marta García Garralón has compiled this glossary about the terminology of 'risk’ within the Iberian world, especially the Carrera de India. This document is a work in progress and comments and suggestions are most welcome.
