I grew up in Pontypridd in South Wales and was educated at Ysgol Gynradd Evan James and Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen. I went on to do my BA, my MPhil and my PhD at Cambridge University, and got my first job as a Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College Cambridge. Since then, I've worked as a Leverhulme research fellow and teaching fellow at University College London, and a teaching fellow at the University of St Andrews. In 2017, I came to Exeter to start a lectureship in twentieth-century literature.

My work focuses on the relationship between modernist literature and its historical contexts and legacies. My first book, Granular Modernism, was published in 2014 by Oxford University Press, and I'm hoping to finish my second book, Shallow Modernism, by the end of the year. I've also published articles and book chapters on a wide range of subjects, including kimonos, shy irony, labour-saving devices, LA traffic, Nabokovian colour photography, doors, slot machines, squeamishness, pseudopsychology, and pulling out of parties at the last minute ('chucking').
