Trans-National Cinemas (EAF1505)

30 credits

This module explores key concepts relating to cinema, the nation and transnational screen cultures. You will consider how the idea of national cinema has been re-appraised in film studies  in recent decades in relation to concepts such as ‘transnational cinema’, ‘world cinema’, ‘globalisation’ and ‘accented cinema’. The module will introduce you to a range of popular and independent films, including documentary, from diverse filmmaking cultures across Asia, Europe and Latin America. Using these case studies you will analyse how issues of the transnational relate to questions of border-crossing, diasporas and cross-cultural exchange in film production, exhibition and distribution.
