Four years with your third year on placement.

Students follow an employability development programme during their 1st and 2nd years of study and are supported in their work placement search by our Employability and Placements Adviser.

During your 1st and 2nd years, you will develop key application and employability skills in preparation for searching and competing for placements.  Students are ultimately responsible for sourcing and securing their work placement, with the support of our Employability and Placements Adviser.

For your year in industry, you will pay a significantly reduced tuition fee to Exeter – for more information visit our fees pages.

Yes you would be registered as a student and can access University support services, student discounts and exemptions whilst out on placement for example:

There are taught sessions that take place during term 2 of your 1st year and term 1 of your 2nd year to prepare you for the placement search and recruitment process (e.g. CVs, application forms, interviews and assessment centres). These sessions are compulsory and will appear on your timetable.

The placement year assessment currently comprises of:

  • A reflective essay
  • An employer report
  • A poster and presentation

Entry tariff is the same as the corresponding 3 year programmes.

A minimum 1st year average grade of 50% and completion of the With Employment Experience taught sessions.

Students who have not secured a placement by July/August before their 3rd year will simply revert to a standard 3 year degree.

If you have enterred University without 'with Employment Experience' but would like to join, you are strongly encouraged to join by the end of your 1st term in year 1 (as taught sessions commence in term 2).  Students can join in term 1 of their 2nd year but will need to catch up with prerequisite taught content that they have missed.

To join 'with Employment Experience' you need to log a 'Change of Programme' enquiry via SID Online.

Your placement does not need to be related to your degree subject. Our students have been successful with employers across a very broad range of sectors, giving you the opportunity to follow your professional interests and discover the myriad opportunities available.

Your placement must be of a professional level. The term ‘professional level’ refers to roles where you are performing an activity that requires a certain level of education, skill, or training. There is a required standard of competency, knowledge or education (i.e. degree level) that must be demonstrated.

You can undertake your placement in the UK or Abroad.

The minimum placement requirement is 28 weeks full time. Students are encouraged to complete a longer placement, as the more time you have, the more you will develop transferable skills and gain experiences to equip you for your future career.
