Natasha Hemmings

English Subject Co-Chair

Congratulations on your offer and welcome to English at Exeter! English is an exciting degree to study and there is lots of scope for pursuing your own particular interests so it’s likely to be very rewarding.

Many of the modules available are research-led and there are also inter-disciplinary modules available such as ‘Cultures of Neuroscience’ which I’m very excited to study next term because it is a combined English and Science module and will be unlike any module I’ve ever taken before.

The department really cares about student opinion which is why the Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) is so important. The SSLC is responsible for presenting student opinion to the department so that changes can be made if necessary or things which are going particularly well can be expanded upon. Taking on the role of English Subject Chair in my final year is a lot of responsibility but it is very rewarding to see that changes that student engagement can bring about.

This year we are also focusing on developing a sense of community between all three years of English students as well as the department and we recently celebrated National Poetry Day with a poetry reading event which was really well attended.

I hope future students will take an interest in the SSLC and get the most out of their experience at Exeter.
