PhD in Theology and Religion
Programme overview
The Department of Theology and Religion at the University of Exeter is a growing, collaborative, research community committed to providing an excellent interdisciplinary environment for postgraduate students. The Department has strengths in biblical studies, ethics and applied theology, theology and contemporary issues and theology and embodiment. Interchange between the disciplines provides a stimulating and supportive environment for research. Key research themes include scriptural hermeneutics, applied theology, environmental ethics, theological aesthetics and the role of theology in the public sphere. There is also a cluster of work on placing religious texts from the Eastern Mediterranean in their religious, social and political contexts. Find out more about our research culture. Visit our research web pages for more information about our research themes, projects and centres.
Supervision
The Department adopts a hands on approach to supervision which has proven effective in helping students to successfully complete their PhDs. This is typically team-based to give students access to a broad range of subject expertise as well as pastoral support from a mentor. Visit our staff profiles or for more information about individual research interests.
What makes studying PhD in Theology in Exeter so rewarding is a combination of several factors. There is a a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere across the department and a not-too-large group of postgraduates which means not only plenty of dedicated personal supervision but also possibilities of informal gatherings of students and staff. The nice variety of faith commitments and methodological approaches of students and staff means that engaged discussions are a never-ending story here and this is something I find stimulating and enjoyable. Last but not least, I have a stable working station at University. So far, I can say my time here has been great.
