Interpreting the Bible on Screen (THE3206)

30 credits

This module examines the representation of the Bible in the medium of film. You will engage with a range of (mostly north American) films produced for the cinema or TV from the early years of the 20th century to the present, and critically reflect on the ways in which biblical material has been interpreted and represented in them. You will encounter a number of biblical themes and characters that have become standards on screen, and a series of socio-political contexts and technologies that have shaped how the Bible has been used and interpreted in screen media. You will be encouraged to reflect on how the reception of the Bible on screen has shaped how it is conceived of and used in contemporary culture more broadly.
