'1662': Historical and Ecumenical Perspectives

A 3-day conference to be held at the University of Exeter, 28-30 August  2012

Sponsored by the University of Exeter, Department of Theology and Churches Together in England

The year 1662 saw the restoration of the Book of Common Prayer and of episcopacy in the Church of England after they had been abolished in the 1640s.   As a result, it also witnessed the departure or ejection of hundreds of ministers who could not accept these changes.  The divisions among Christians that stem from 1662 remain to this day, for churches have long memories.  The conference will revisit the events of 1662 in this 350th anniversary year and assess their significance for the ecumenical movement.

Speakers will include:

  • Professor Kenneth Fincham
  • Professor Stephen Taylor
  • Dr. Judith Maltby
  • Dr. Stephen Hampton
  • Professor David Thompson
  • Professor Paul Fiddes
