Being Human is the UK’s national festival of the humanities, led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London in partnership with the Arts & Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.

University of Exeter events
During the festival, University of Exeter academics will open up their research to a number of different audiences with events across Devon. Everyone is invited to attend the free events which will celebrate humanities research. The theme for the 2020 festival is 'New Worlds’.

14 November, 2-3pm. This is an online event.
At this workshop find out what was different about medieval books, and how modern technology is allowing experts to capture them better than traditional print editions can. Featuring pretty pictures of old manuscripts, an introduction to digital editing, and a sneak preview of a University of Exeter project to digitally edit a textbook for teaching French in medieval England. This interactive workshop will take place online via Zoom and last approximately one hour.
No prior knowledge of either the Middle Ages or digital technologies is required.
21 November, 9.30am - 6.30pm. This is an online event.
Tune in to watch an exciting array of four films from across the world, newly subtitled into English by University of Exeter MA Translation Studies students, or recently subtitled professionally. Choose one or more that you are interested in, with films coming from Africa, Asia and Europe and spanning four languages – Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian and Spanish. The two documentaries and two feature films all share a focus on gender, from an early example of Spanish feminist cinema, to a Moroccan 1980s classic, a Chinese LGBT documentary, and a recent documentary about Italian second-wave feminists.
After your screening experience, be sure to attend the virtual roundtable discussion with film-makers, academics, translators, film restorers and MA students who subtitled the films.

9:30 – 11:30: Film 1 Life Goes On (language: Spanish with English subtitles, Fernán Gómez, 1963)
11:30 – 13:00: Film 2 A Door to the Sky (language: Arabic with English subtitles, Benlyazid, 1985)
13:00 – 15:30: Film 3 Shanghai Queer (language: Chinese [Mandarin] with English subtitles, Xiangqi, 2019)
15:30 – 17:30: Film 4 Melmaridè (language: Italian with English subtitles; Bozzarelli & Daneluzzo, 2019)
17:30 – 18:30: Roundtable discussion
