Success for the College of Humanities at Students' Guild Teaching Awards

Students, academics and staff from the University of Exeter and the Students' Guild gathered on 30 April to celebrate the 2015 Teaching Awards. The College of Humanities achieved great success, with four winners and four runners-up, more than any other College in the University.

The Students’ Guild Teaching Awards were originally introduced in 2010. The awards ceremony formally recognises outstanding teaching and support at the University. Now in their sixth year, the Teaching Awards were celebrated with a drinks reception and a unique exhibition before the winners of each of the 10 award categories were announced. The winners were selected by students in a survey organised by the University of Exeter Students’ Guild.

Professor Sarah Hamilton, Associate Dean for Education and research said of the achievement: “It is wonderful to see the work of these Humanities colleagues being recognised by their students in this way. We should also celebrate the fact that so many Humanities students participated in the Guild’s survey, nominating not just those who won on the night but colleagues from across the whole College; it is a real testament to the community of learning which exists within the College amongst staff and their students”.

College of Humanities winners:

Dr Emmanuel Destenay (Modern Languages) for Best Feedback Provider
Dr Siam Bhayro (Theology and Religion) for Most Supportive Staff Member
Professor José Iriarte (Archaeology) for Research Inspired Teaching
Dr Sharon Marshall (Classics and Ancient History) for Best Lecturer

College of Humanities runners-up:

Zoe Bulaitis (English) for Best Postgraduate Teacher
Professor Alan Outram (Archaeology) for Best Supervisor (Taught)
Isabel Moros (Modern Languages) for Most Supportive Staff Member

Vice President Education of the Students’ Guild, Ben Street commented: "The Guild's Teaching Awards are the highlight of the year for Academic Representation and are such an important way for students to reward, recognise and thank the staff who inspire and shape their time at Exeter.”

He said: “It is a great event that emphasises the impact that excellent teaching has on creating a world class student experience. Huge congratulations to all our winners and runners-up."
