Exeter subjects ranked amongst very best in the world
Exeter has strengthened its position as being ranked amongst the world’s best universities, according to an influential international league table.
Both science and humanities subjects feature amongst the best of their kind globally, in the QS World University Rankings published on Wednesday, 29 April.
Geography, History and English Language and Literature all appear in the Top 50 worldwide according to the prestigious rankings.
In total, the University of Exeter features in the world’s Top 200 institutions in 19 of the 36 subjects included in the QS University Rankings by Subject.
Building on the success of last year, History has strengthened its Top 50 position rising to 34th. English Language and Literature is ranked at 48th, while Geography is the highest ranked subject, positioned at 28th.
Other notable entries include Psychology, Environmental Sciences, and Politics and International Studies which are ranked in the Top 100; Earth and Marine Sciences, Education, Agriculture & Forestry and Modern Languages are ranked in the 100-150 range; and Philosophy, Engineering – Civil and Structural, Biological Sciences, Accounting & Finance, Business and Management Studies, Law and Economics and Econometrics appear in the 150 – 200 range.
Professor Dan Charman, Dean of the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, said: “Once again I am delighted that the world-class teaching conducted within our departments, and across the University as a whole, has been recognised as being amongst the very best.
“Geography has maintained its strong position amongst the top 30 in the world, which reflects not only the way our academic staff engage with key research questions, but also how they translate this into teaching our excellent students. It is a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment by everyone in the department, across our campuses in Exeter and Cornwall, and is thoroughly deserved.”
Professor Andrew Thorpe, Dean of the College of Humanities, added: “Exeter has very strong ambitions in the Humanities, and these results prove that they are being fulfilled. They are testimony to the commitment and excellence of colleagues across the College. The results in History and English are particularly strong and show that in those areas we are truly world-leading.“
More than 3,500 universities were evaluated for this, the fifth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and 894 institutions ranked in total. More than 100 million citation attributions were analysed and verified and more than 14,000 programmes researched.
