Dr Paul Williams and Professor John Lennon

English lecturer takes part in staff exchange with the University of South Florida

Dr Paul Williams, an English lecturer from the University of Exeter, visited the University of South Florida (USF) last week to meet with members of the English department.

During his visit, Dr Paul Williams shadowed English Professor John Lennon and co-taught three seminars on American film and literature. A reciprocal visit from Professor Lennon will take place in March 2014.

Dr Williams also delivered a public lecture on his current research project – the culture of the graphic novel in the 1970s and early 1980s. An information session was held for USF English students at which Dr Williams discussed study abroad opportunities at the University of Exeter including the International Summer School which will take place from 5 July - 26 July 2014.

Dr Williams comments on his visit, “There is widespread good will for future collaboration on research projects, and where my own area of research is concerned, USF is right now in the process of appointing a lecturer in graphic novels so that represents one avenue for future dialogue”.

In March 2014, Professors Sarah Hamilton, Oliver Creighton and Simon Barton will visit USF to discuss potential future collaboration in the Humanities. This visit is expected to yield major areas for cooperative research, faculty mobility and potential student exchange. The visit will not only consolidate relations between Humanities departments at both universities at the level of research and teaching, but it will also help to enhance Exeter’s overall reputation in the USA and strengthen its global network of interests.

Date: 3 March 2014
