Edward Mills

I am a postgraduate research student in Modern Languages (French), supervised by Thomas Hinton and Emma Cayley. My research focuses on French literature of the medieval period, and in particular on how education was understood and enacted in Anglo-Norman texts in the post-Conquest period (c. 1100 - c. 1450). It is funded by the Niklaus-Cartwright studentships in French scheme at the University of Exeter. I am also the current PGR Representative for Modern Languages, and am therefore responsible for ensuring that postgraduates' voices are heard as part of the Modern Languages research community.

Before coming to Exeter, I taught at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (France) as a lecteur d'anglais. I retain a keen interest in the theory and practice of English language teaching, as well as in medievalism and public perceptions of the medieval period more broadly (on which I devised and taught a module at the ENS). Prior to teaching at the ENS, I completed an undergraduate degree in Modern and Medieval Languages at Clare College, University of Cambridge, followed by a Master's in Modern Languages at Wolfson College, University of Oxford.

In recent years, I have developed a keen interest in editorial practice, especially where this intersects with digital scholarly practiced such as editing through the TEI framework. To this end, I am currently working as a research assistant on the Values of French project, based at King's College, London, where I am helping to transcribe and encode into XML segments of the Histoire ancienne jusqu'à César, an extensive early-thirteenth-century prose compilation and 'universal history'.
