Researchers in Modern Languages are actively engaged in projects across a broad range of subjects, including linguistics and translation studies, film, visual arts, and literary culture. Our research ranges across time from the medieval period to the contemporary, and spans the whole of Europe, including Russia, extending across the world to North Africa and Latin America.
Research staff
The Department has an excellent record in winning research grants and funded studentships for postgraduate research. We have over thirty research-active members of staff, including Associate Research Fellows working on projects based in Exeter funded by the AHRC. Our research expertise covers a wide range of areas, including linguistics and translation, literature, visual arts, cultural history, and cinema.
Research degrees
Our research students take part in one of the liveliest and most productive research environments in the country and benefit from dedicated supervision by internationally rated research staff. We have around 70 research students registered in the Department in French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Latin American, Russian, Sexuality and Gender Studies, and welcome interdisciplinary projects.
