Galdos and Hispanic Cinema (MLS2062)

15 credits

Spain’s greatest author since Cervantes, this module takes Galdós out of the library and explores his inspiration to Hispanic film directors across the twentieth century. First, we will closely read the chosen novels, and second, with guided reference to adaptation theory, we will closely analyse selected films.

This module is suitable for Hispanic Studies students at level 2, particularly those who are following a Hispanic Film pathway. Hispanic Studies students who have not previously studied cinema should have studied at least one Spanish culture module at level 1. Level 1 Spanish language is a pre-requisite for this module as all novels are read in the original and some films do not have subtitles.

Students on Film Studies / Visual Culture will need an equivalent proficiency in Spanish language to take this module.
