The Latin American Short Story (MLS2061)

15 credits

This module offers a valuable glimpse into modern Latin American culture and society through a close reading of selected short stories from Argentina, Colombia and Chile. After surveying the salient features of the short story, it explores how writers from these countries employ the genres of Modernism, the Fantastic, and Magical Realism to question notions of personal and social reality, identity, memory, and liminality. By examining the sense of mystery, the ‘Uncanny’, magic and ambiguity in these narratives, the module grapples with the existential, political and social questions they pose, whilst also speculating on their intended effects on the reader.
