A Thousand Faces: Cultures and History in 19th-Century Italy (MLI1121)

15 credits

We analyze and link together aspects of recent Italian history that are generally considered in isolation by students of anthropology (what did Italians eat and drink in the past?), economics (to what extent was the battle against poverty won after unification in 1861?), social mores (what structures did families have across regions? were local identities overly strong?) and arts (why and how did opera develop in Italy? were arts and crafts encouraged?). This module lays the foundations of an advanced understanding of contemporary Italy, but does not require any knowledge of Italian and is also suited to non-specialist students.
