Italian Cinema: An Introduction (MLI1056)

15 credits

Taking the key theme of the child in Italian cinema as a case study, this module will introduce students to reading film. Looking at some of the most significant films in Italian cinema history, we will think about the issues of film style and narration, of representation, the film industry and film audiences, the idea of national cinema, stars, and film genre. We will also consider some key issues in twentieth-century Italy, from post-war reconstruction to immigration. All films selected will be available with subtitles so this module is accessible to anyone with an interest in cinema and Italy.
