Evolution and Revolutions In Nineteenth-Century Painting in France - From Jacques-Louis David to Calude Monet (MLF3005)

15 credits

This module will provide you with an overview of the history of painting in France in the 19th century. This was a time of great political turmoil and social unrest, spanning the period from when France sought to wrest itself from the rule of absolute monarchy to the painful birth of a Republic. How did painting underline or stray from deeply held social values? How did visual arts, in turn, shape new visions and pave new ways for art? The module is open to students who have not studied art before, as well as those who have.
