Varieties of French (MLF2029)

15 credits

You have probably already noticed variations in the grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of French. In this module we explore several varieties of French: regional and social accents, Canadian French and French Creoles, as spoken in the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. Another major focus is the grammar of Colloquial French – of special relevance to anyone planning to spend time in France. The module will enhance your understanding both of the French language and of aspects of the French-speaking world. Prerequisites: a good command of French (e.g. MLF1001 ‘French Language’), and either MLF1103 ‘The French Language, Present and Past’, or willingness to do two weeks 'catch-up' work before the module.
