About us

  • Highly flexible degrees involving single or multiple languages
  • Friendly and vibrant teaching and learning environment

Hispanic Studies at Exeter is one of only a few Hispanic departments in the UK to offer a full range of teaching in the wider subject, from Spanish linguistics and dialectology to contemporary Spanish women’s writing, modern Peruvian culture, and contemporary Spanish film.

Study of canonical writers like Galdós and Vargas Llosa is complemented by our commitment to cutting-edge new topics like the recovery of historical memory.

We offer language modules in Portuguese and Catalan as well as Castilian Spanish. Identified pathways allow undergraduates to develop interests in specific areas throughout the BA programme. Modules at final-year level are research-led and taught by internationally recognised specialists in the field. Our language modules are consistently commended by external examiners for their imaginative teaching and intellectual rigour.

Translation Studies forms a major component of our curriculum and we are involved in a flourishing MA programme.
