The author was a former Lieutenant Commander Imperial Navy constructor. This work was originally written as a report for the Occupation authorities as a guide to the ships surrendered by Japan and published by the Administrative Division of the Second Demobilization Bureau. The main work consists of line drawings of ships arranged by type, with details on history and fate. The work in its reprinted form also has an introduction and some photographs taken at the end of the war for the US Navy.
