The author was a Dutch Naval Officer who fought in the Netherlands in 1940 and refused to give the Germans his parole. In 1941 he escaped from Colditz and reached England via Switzerland and Spain. He took command of MTB 203, based at Dover and in 1944 was promoted to be SNO for Dutch coastal forces based at Dover. He ended the war in a staff post
