Overview
I am a lecturer in Modern History specialising in comparative European colonial history. My reearch is concerned with British and German imperialism in the early 20th century and the global dimension of the First World War.
I hold an M.A. from the Humboldt Universität Berlin and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. I have previousl taught at the University of Exeter (2009-2014) and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at King's College London (2014-2016).
Research
My research is concerned with the social and cultural impact of the First World War on the colonial societies of South Africa as well as German and British East Africa. I am interested in the interaction between African, Indian, and European soldiers and civilians in the colonial theatres of war and the representation and memory of these campaigns in Europe and Africa.

Biography
I am a lecturer at the University of Exeter. I hold a PhD from Trinity College Dublin and have previously been a postdoctoral researcher at King’s College London as part of the HERA-research project "Cultural Exchange in a Time of Global Conflict: Colonials, Neutrals and Belligerents during the First World War".
My research is concerned with the social and cultural impact of the First World War on the colonial societies of South Africa as well as German and British East Africa. I am interested in the interaction between African, Indian, and European soldiers and civilians in the colonial theatres of war and the representation and memory of these campaigns in Europe and Africa.
I am currently preparing a monograph on the war in German East African and edit a volume on colonial photography during the era of the First World War which will appear with Bloomsbury.
