I am interested in the social, cultural and familial history of the missionary enterprise in the nineteenth century, as well as colonial and postcolonial history more broadly. I have recently completed my PhD at King's College London (having also gained a Masters in Imperial and Commonwealth History there in 2006), and am excited to embrace my current teaching position at the University of Exeter where I teach on Violence and Colonial Rule in Africa and Asia (1880-1945) and European Imperialism (1830-1975). My primary research interests focus on the history of missionary families in the nineteenth century and are strongly influenced by gender history, cultural history and colonial/postcolonial history. I also have a strong interest in the day-to-day dynamics of mission stations, including relationships within and between missionary families, and convert communities. As such my future research will be concerned with the role of gossip in evangelical communities in Britain and abroad.
