I work on the modern history of science, with a particular focus on the development and wider influence of the human, biological and medical sciences in Britain, France, the USA and German-speaking Europe from the eighteenth to the early-twentieth century.

I use my work to draw connections between often separated national contexts and historiographic areas.  My wider thematic interests include:

  • Ideas of race, ethnicity and human difference.
  • Nationhood and nationalism.
  • Theories of evolution, development, heredity and degeneration.
  • Historiography and historical consciousness.
  • Processes of transnational exchange and perception.
  • European interactions with the wider world.
