I work on the modern history of science, with a particular focus on the development and wider influence of the human, biological and medical sciences in Britain, France, the USA and German-speaking Europe from the eighteenth to the early-twentieth century.

I use my work to draw connections between often separated national contexts and historiographic areas. My wider thematic interests include:

Ideas of race, ethnicity and human difference.
Nationhood and nationalism.
Theories of evolution, development, heredity and degeneration.
Historiography and historical consciousness.
Processes of transnational exchange and perception.
European interactions with the wider world.
