I am a historian of the religious, social and political history of South Asia since c.1800, namely colonial India, and postcolonial India and Pakistan. My primary research interests relate in particular to religious change, especially within Islam, and Muslim society and politics in South Asia. I also have broader interests in European colonialism, especially in India and the Middle East; South Asian governance and political institutions in the twentieth century; Indian nationalism, and the partition of India; and religious and communal identities and conflicts in modern South Asia.
