Biography

I was educated as an undergraduate at Peterhouse, University of Cambridge (BA in History, 1985-88). After spending some time out of academic life in the 'real world' as an accountant, I returned to do an MA in Medieval History at King's College, London (1992-93), and went on to do a PhD there on 'The Practice of Penance, 900-1050' (King's College London, 1993-97), under Professors Janet L. Nelson and Anne Duggan.

Whilst completing my PhD I taught medieval history at Birkbeck College, University of London, and palaeography at King's College, London. I went on to teach medieval history at the Universities of Glasgow (1997-98), Manchester (1998-99) and Southampton (1999-2000), before being appointed to a lectureship at the University of Exeter in 2000, becoming a senior lecturer in 2005. I held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship from 1999-2002, first at Southampton, then at Exeter.
