My research focuses primarily on the political and social history of the medieval Iberian Peninsula during the period c.1000-1300. I have published extensively on the aristocracy, chronicles and chroniclers, and Christian-Muslim relations, especially with regard to the peninsular crusading movement and the activities of Christian mercenaries in Muslim Iberia and North Africa. I also have a broader interest in the history of Spain and in the development of Spanish national identity through the ages.
