Professor Simon Barton
Biography
I completed my BA at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and carried out doctoral research at the University of York under the supervision of Professor Richard Fletcher. During the course of that research I was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Study Abroad Studentship (1988-1990), which allowed me to carry out work in the state and ecclesiastical archives of Spain. Between 1990 and 1993 I held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at Robinson College, Cambridge. In 1993 I was appointed to a lectureship in the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Exeter and was later promoted to a Readership and a Personal Chair. I joined the Department of History in 2006. I have recently been awarded a Major Research Fellowship by the Leverhulme Trust to enable me to carry out a three-year project 'On the Frontiers of Islam: Cross-border relations in Medieval Iberia and North Africa, c.1000-1500'.
