PhD study

A number of History research students are attached to the Centre for the Study of War, State and Society. Staff from the Centre are supervising PhD students in a range of different topics, including:

  • the history of naval warfare and the development of the British state
  • eighteenth-century warfare in Europe and North America
  • naval victualling and agricultural production in pre-industrial England
  • the social history of the Spanish Civil War
  • conflict and co-operation in US-Latin American relations
  • the impact of bombing during World War II
  • the impact of World War II on British party politics
  • war, occupation and memory in Eastern Europe
  • colonial security services and nationalist insurgency
  • race and military cultures in Africa's wars of decolonisation
  • human rights abuses and combatant - non-combatant status in wars and civil conflicts
  • child soldiers in Africa
  • China and Taiwan in War and Civil War
