Undergraduate Essay Awards: British Commission for Maritime History. Prizes of £75. Awarded for project work or final year undergraduate dissertations in the broad field of maritime history. Dissertations must be awarded first class marks to be eligible. Nominations by Head of Department.
Doctoral Prize: the British Commission and Boydell & Brewer (more details here). Prize of £200, and the winner's thesis will be considered for publication in a revised form by Boydell & Brewer. Awarded to the best doctoral thesis in maritime history completed in that academic year.
The Mountbatten Maritime Award: The Maritime Foundation. Prize of an engraved silver Armada Plate. Awarded to a work of literature that contributes most significantly to public awareness of maritime issues.
The Anderson Medal: The Society for Nautical Research. Awarded for a written work of history which has made the most outstanding contribution to understanding the maritime past.
The Sir Julian Corbett Prize in Modern Naval History: Institute of Historical Research, London University. Prize of £1,000. Awarded annually for work not previously published and based on original materials, on a subject concerned with the naval history of any country after 1500. The length should not exceed 15,000 words.
The Caird Medal: The National Maritime Museum. Prize of a medal, £750 and a public lecture. Awarded to the individual who has done conspicuously important work in the field of the Museum's interests and is of a nature which involves communicating with the public.
Duke of Westminster's Medal: Royal United Services Institute. Prize of a medal, £1,000 and a lecture. Awarded to a book by a living author, regardless of nationality, gender or age, who makes a notable and original contribution to the study of international and national security and defence.
Fellowships
Caird Short Term Fellowships: National Maritime Museum. Award of £1,600 per month for up to three months to fund advanced research into the Museum's collections. Intended to support scholars and museum professionals living at a distance from London.
Caird North American Fellowship: National Maritime Museum, in partnership with the John Carter Brown Library, Providence, Rhode Island. Award of £1,600 monthly for three months, with £500 for travel. Intended for scholars not resident in the USA to study resources on the north east coast of the USA. The Fellow has to spend some time at the John Carter Brown Library.
Caird Senior Fellowships: National Maritime Museum. Award of £20,000 annually. One year post-doctoral fellowship to support high-quality research on the Museum's collections or in any field of British naval and maritime history.
Sackler-Card Fellowship: National Maritime Museum. Award of £30,000 for up to two years. Intended for mid-career academics, already in post at an academic institution, to devote themselves to a sustained period of research.
