Political economy and the imperial state

Among historians, the importance of putting metropole and colony in the same analytic frame is widely acknowledged, but arguably achieved by relatively few. At Exeter we have combined our strengths in metropolitan British and French history with an interest in empire and extra-European history to generate new insights across this spectrum of activity, and to explore the various techniques by which these histories can be brought together. Across the department there are historians exploring the political and economic cultures and ideologies of empire, and the external dimensions of imperial states.
